San Diego is known for its sandy beaches, endless sunshine and a thriving food scene. While the city is most synonymous with craft beer and tacos, it’s also a mecca for outstanding desserts- including top rated ice cream shops. The locals sure have their opinions on where to find the best ice cream in the city, and I’ve done my fair share of research. I am here to take you on a tour of 7 must try ice cream spots in San Diego.
1. An’s Dry Cleaning and An’s Hatmakers
Starting, of course, with An’s Dry Cleaning. Yes it’s a gelato shop, and it is a veritable big deal. This humble store was voted the best ice cream shop in the ENTIRE UNITED STATES by USA Today (jaw on floor).
So, what’s with the name? Their storefront used to be An’s Dry Cleaning– a laundry service on Adams Ave. When the the gelato business opened, they decided to keep the name and maintained the exterior with the original vintage-looking sign. The interior details are a nod to the tradition, and all support the laundry theme: the tables are shaped like ironing boards and napkin dispensers made of iron plates. The flavors are named after fabrics-like Cotton (rice, milk, and cinnamon) and Cashmere (goat cheese and honey). The gelato is luxuriously creamy, you will never get over the texture. Each customer is offered a flavor tour– starting with a palate cleanser, a refreshing ginger lime sorbet (not on the menu, but you can order a scoop). Then you’re offered a series of tasters and explanation of the flavor profiles. So fancy.
There’s a second shop location in Del Mar – An’s Hatmaker’s where they continue the theme.
2. Stella Jeans
I think this is the best ice cream in San Diego, hands down. Personally, I think it tops An’s, which has a rabid cult following.
Stella Jeans values a strong sense of community, palpable when you walk through the door, because the place always draws a crowd- but don’t worry the line goes fast. They offer playful, globally-inspired flavors like the purple Ube and Pandesal Toffee, and Mango Sticky Rice. The waffle cone are outstanding and the smell alone will enchant you immediately upon entry- I swear it’s magic. My all time favorite flavor is the Strawberry Oat Crumble– it will have me crawling back on my hand and knees until the end of time. (This flavor is vegan; I’m not) but I pledge my undying love to the SOC.
3. Salt & Straw
Salt & Straw is located in Little Italy. Their concept is to foster community and connection through ice cream and I think that’s adorable. It’s also clearly working because the shop is always packed- drawing a crowd with their extra creamy texture and adventurous and inventive ice cream flavors. Seasonal flavors include a Thanksgiving edition with cranberry sauce and turkey stuffing. Yet, this isn’t nearly as alarming or unconventional as Creepy Crawly Critters– an experimental Halloween flavor made with meal worms and cricket legs!
Of course there are plenty of tried and true classics that I can personally recommend with enthusiasm. Salt & Straw is one of the best ice cream shops in San Diego.
4. Bobboi
This gelato shop specializes in super authentic Italian flavors recognized by gelato aficionados. My faves are the Moka, a deep espresso and dark chocolate combo, and Bacio, a traditional chocolate and hazelnut combo- can’t miss with these scoops. There are also vegan options, and more experimental varieties based on traditional Italian flavors and ingredients- like olive oil, blood orange, and panettone.
My favorite Bobboi location is in downtown La Jolla, steps away from La Jolla Cove. So grab your scoops and enjoy a stroll around the picturesque coastline and admire the gorgeous view and the sea lions! There are 4 Bobboi location in San Diego: Little Italy Food Hall, Kettner BLVD, Mission Beach, and La Jolla
5. Mariposa’s
Mariposa’s is a long-standing favorite in the neighborhood of Normal Heights. This family-owned mom-and-pop shop specializes in small-batch ice cream, perfecting the tried-and-true favorites. The interior is a feast for the eyes, with walls adorned in handmade artwork and fluttering butterflies. Between them, you’ll find an impressive collection of Beatles memorabilia, creating an atmosphere that feels like a heartfelt tribute to both generations of loyal patrons and the iconic band. It’s more than an ice cream shop—it’s a delightful slice of community nostalgia.
6. Chocolat
This gelato shop is very exciting to me because I discovered it when I lived in Italy. There was a shop very close to my dorm and we frequented it….frequently. Don’t worry about how frequently. Now there are 2 locations right here San Diego, one in the bustling Gaslamp Quarter and another in the lively Hillcrest neighborhood. The Hillcrest location is especially exciting, as it doubles as a bistro, bakery, and chocolate shop, making it a perfect chocolatey paradise. No doubt that Chocolat is one of the best places for ice cream in San Diego. Plus, it’s surrounded by the vibrant energy that Hillcrest is known for, so be sure to check out the area.
7. The Baked Bear
Baked Bear is one of the most interesting ice cream stores in San Diego. You can find this shop in the heart of Pacific Beach, just minutes away from the pier and boardwalk. Beach days and ice cream go hand in hand.
This shop is all about customizable ice cream sandwiches—its so cute and fun. Choose from an array of cookies, brownies, and seasonal favorites to build your sandwich, mixing and matching tops and bottoms for a one-of-a-kind treat. You can even opt to have your cookies warmed up for an extra ooey, gooey fresh baked experience. Select a blob or ice cream for the middle—maybe the signature baked bear flavor, because it’s bright blue and photogenic. Then roll your sandwich in toppings like chocolate chips, Nutella or fruity cereal for a finishing touch. Does your phone eat first? It will here.
